An Easy Guide to the F1 2026 Regulations.

This is your easy to understand guide to the FIA's F1 2026 regulations for new fans, or those who may not understand a lot technical terms.

The 2026 regulations brings some big changes to Formula 1. The FIA sets these new regulations in hopes that they will allow closer and more exciting racing between the teams.

New Weight and Size Regulations.

The cars are going to be lighter. They will be 30kg (approximately 66.14 pounds) lighter, which means the cars will be more agile and will be able battle on track much easier. The cars will be slightly smaller as well.

Better Power Units

The power unit will get redesigned and will include increased battery power, and  an equal mix of gas and electric power. These units have an increase of electrical power by 300%. They will also be using 100% sustainable fuels.

New and Improved Aerodynamics

Improved aerodynamics. Both the front and back wings will include moveable elements that will allow for closer racing. The cars will be able to switch between two setups. One will allow lower fuel consumption and the other will increase cornering performance. The moveable front and back wings will allow better cornering speed with one wing angle called Z-mode, and lower drag and faster straight line speed with another wing angle called X-Mode.

New Overtake System

There will be increased overtaking opportunities with a new system that gives drivers a short burst of extra battery power when they're within one second of the car in front. With the new "manual override mode" similar to DRS when the cars are within 1 second of the car in front of them they can use extra energy power from the battery to help them overtake. This is different form DRS that only makes the cars more aerodynamic to help with overtaking

Better Safety Regulations

There are also improved safety requirements with stronger structures and more intense tests. An improved front impact structure to lower the risk of front nose detachment in impacts. As well as better side protection around the driver and fuel cell areas.
